Windows Vista ：ビスタといえばカムリ？Longhornの正式名称発表

　
　新OSの名称に採用された「Vista」は、「眺望」「展望」などの意味を表している。前バージョンのWindows XPの「XP」は「eXPerience(経験)」から名付けられたものだった。Microsoftでは「Windows Vista」という名称に「素晴らしい見通し」「明るい未来」という意味を込めたかったものと考えられる。
　
　
　「Vista」は、並木道など縦に狭い、細長い眺めを意味し、訳語としては、見晴らし、光景、予想、展望などがあてられる。
　
　
　Windows Vistaは、2006年末発売予定のWindows XPの次世代バージョンにあたる製品だ。従来とは異なる新しいアーキテクチャの採用が特徴となる。「WinFX」と呼ばれる新しいAPI体系を導入し、統合プレゼンテーションエンジン「Avalon」、通信モジュールの「Indigo」、ファイルシステムを司る「WinFS」という3種類のコアコンポーネントを搭載する。
　
　
　しかし、強力なメタ検索機能を提供する予定だったWinFSの実装は遅れており、2006年の発売に間に合わせるため、Windows Vistaの初期バージョンではWinFSの機能縮小版が搭載されるという。AvalonとIndigoについては、すでにWindows XP向けのCTP版の公開が行われている。現在Windows Vistaは2005年夏でのベータ1の提供に向けて、テスターを募集している段階
　
　
　Microsoftでは、Windows Vistaの開発者向けBeta 1を8月3日までにリリースする予定だとしている。
